This is a rough stoneware clay. It was kneaded into a square block. Two sections/slices were cut with a coiled spring to give them texture. These were shaped into a vessel form, joined at the side seam and bisque fired at 1,000 C. Before re-firing at 1,300 C, the form was rubbed with an iron-manganese solution to obtain the rich brown.
