‘I’ll be the one in bright colours with the chunky bling jewellery’, she’d said and laughed when I’d called to arrange the interview. And there she was - right on time – ready to tell me about herself and her husband of twenty-five years. In the shadow of the doorway, her hair looked black, but as she passes through, a shaft of sunlight from a window above illuminates a halo of gorgeous violet. The light catches her eyes too, a deep brown of obviously Indian heritage: beautiful, intelligent – scanning the café for the stranger she’d allow to explore her secrets for maintaining nuptial bliss all these years. She approaches with the self-confident poise and engaging smile of a woman who loves people, a vivacious woman who also knows how to be loved. Not two minutes into the interview, she describes her husband, adding: ‘He’s my knight in shining armor, and every day in many ways, I make sure he knows.’
