‘The architecture of Granada, the Alhambra and Generalife stands as an embodiment of aesthetic achievement and past power. They offer a sense of connection with history and a reassuring appreciation of the endurance of beauty contrasted against the transience of power – the beauty remains while old power struggles end or are replaced by new ones. Looking at ancient structures or even two-thousand-year-old olive trees, I’m aware of both the finite nature of life and our connection with the past. The result is a deeper appreciation of life. Travelling offers me opportunities and time out from my everyday humdrum to contemplate the existential – in the absence of Angst, the result is gratitude.’
‘As my bus to Málaga turns onto the main highway, I’m aware that my memory of Granada is stored in my senses. It’s in the vision of delicate yet robust architecture, the sensuous coolness of shady gardens, the fragrance of roses and jasmine, the taste of spices in Arabic and Turkish cuisine, and the emotive sound and rhythm of Romani flamenco. Granada is an exquisite experience.’
