I painted this after working on a project in NAIDOC week (National Aboriginal and Islander Observance Committee) while also chairing an AFUW committee that strove to encourage more First Nation women to enter university. The painting shows a woman moving forward into a land unnaturally divided by lines – the pattern on her outstretched arm resembling a suburban subdivision. The fluid and organic division of space of her heritage is also represented, but as she moves forward, it starts to unravel. The painting hints at the idea that the harmonious and equitable coexistence of Indigenous and European cultures must aim not to undo ancient norms and patterns.
